Winter Care: See Your Lawn Mower Successfully Through to Spring

With temperatures barely creeping above zero, it might be wise to keep your garden machinery in check through the cold snaps. How does your lawn mower function in freezes? In order to ensure your mower sparks up like a breeze in Spring, there are a few points to consider during its winter storage.

Check oil levels – Your lawn mower needs to be in full working order at all times, this means that as well as regularly checking oil levels throughout the year, it also needs topping up through the winter. If yours requires an oil change, this must be carried out immediately (we can help with this service at Balmers GM). Always follow instructions and use high quality oil.

Check fuel levels – As we approach a lengthy spell of colder weather, lawn mower fuel tanks should be emptied. Fuel combustibility reduces over time, so any residue in the tank may cause start-up headaches in Spring.

Cleaning – It is important to keep your lawn mower spick and span, particularly in an idle period. Be sure to remove any grass from the exhaust and remove any tricky turf from the housing with a wooden or plastic utensil.  You can gently clean the housing of the lawn mower with a brush and water. Engine damage may occur if you use a powerful stream of water on the bearings and gasket.

When cleaning the underside, never tilt your lawn mower sideways as oil may run into the filters or exhaust. Tilting it backwards, with spark plugs pointing upwards, is much safer.

Finally - Ensure the blade is undamaged before you use your lawn mower again. Any cracks need addressing immediately and a replacement should be sourced. Your blade may also need removing and sharpening, if you are not confident in doing this one of our turf care machinery specialists can help.

Storing correctly – After carrying out all the necessary maintenance, your lawn mower kept covered and stored upright in a dry environment free from dust.  If your mower has a starter battery, make sure it is kept in dry and frost-free environment.

Balmers GM stock many fantastic brands, including Hayter lawn mowers and we have trimmed the RRPs on our new and used Viking mowers!
