Selecting the Best Used Tractor for Your Land

Wondering which used tractors would best suit your homestead? Here are some pointers to help you select the best tractor for your land.

If you work on any size land, you may find eventually that you need a little extra power to get the job done. A used tractor is a great, money-saving solution to this problem. Sourcing the right second hand tractor for your farm, private land or commercial use can be a daunting task.

You’ll have to consider whether you require a one-point or three-point-hitch second hand tractor. With the former, attachments operate much the same way as you’d attach small trailers to the bumper of a car. This is a great system for equipment that is to be dragged behind tractors such as compact trailers.

However, if more control is required the three-point-hitch plow is much more effective. The two lift arm pins on the attachment fit into sockets in the lift arms on the tractor, secured with snap-on linchpins. Once mounted on the tractor, attachments can be controlled precisely from the driver's seat through use of a control lever

A three-point hitch also improves turning circles. So if you are after a second hand tractor to accompany a smaller land site, this may be an idea. Not only is your tractor’s entire turning radius can be greatly reduced, but three-point-hitch implements are also easier to transport, particularly if you ever need to take your tractor on a public road, as long as the hitch is raised a sufficient amount to keep them scraping the roadway.

For heavy duty work such as large-scale tilling or plowing, a used tractor model around the 35 horsepower mark is ideal. If you are in need of a machine for simple mowing uses or the upkeep of a smaller garden, anything less than 20hp will suffice.

If you are a small landowner, a petrol-powered used tractor is probably a better choice. Petrol machines run at a much lower compression and lend themselves well to aging. Although newer diesel engines are mostly trouble-free, you can depend upon the reliability of a petrol engine in selecting second hand tractors.
