Garden Care Advice From Balmers This May

With May arriving and bringing the sun with it, now is the perfect time to get out in the garden. As spring slowly gives way to summer, we can finally look forward to those lighter, longer days, which have to encourage us to start up those essential gardening tasks. The greenery and colour is returning and the plants are finally beginning to bloom. This means a busy time for gardeners across the country with gardens requiring extra care at this time of year.

So, it’s time to bring out the garden machinery and get to work. There are a variety of jobs to be done in the garden this month and fortunately we have a second bank holiday weekend to look forward to at the end of the month! There are lots of things to encourage us out of the house and into the garden this month, with plenty of garden shows waiting to inspire us. Here we will look at five simple tips to keep your garden looking great this month.

Keep the Weeds Away

It is important to keep the weeds at bay this month before they get to big to be easily removed. Ideally you should hoe borders on a dry day to encourage killing the weeds off. It is also important to keep removing weeds that grow on paths and terraces by hand.

Keep Plants Well Watered

As we start to see the sun more and more, we have to ensure that our plants are getting enough water. It is recommended that you water plants in the evening, as this will reduce the chances of the water evaporating in the heat of the midday sun. You can also help your garden beds retain moisture by mulching, especially around perennials.

Keep the Pests at Bay

It is important to keep a lookout for pests in the garden as the weather improves. Preferably, you should avoid using chemicals where possible, as they can also kill off insects that prey on the pests you are trying to control. Using friendly slug pellets will keep your tulips safe and avoid killing other insects in your garden.

Keep on top of the Lawn, with Ride on Mowers and more!

When May comes around you can easily mow the lawn once a week. Here at Balmers we offer a wide range of garden machinery to help you stay on top of your lawn’s growth and keep your garden looking neat. Reusing grass cuttings will help maintain the health of your lawn and ensure that it stays a perfect green.

We stock a selection of ride on lawn mowers including highly maneuverable ride on brushcutters ideal for slopes, uneven terrain and areas of dense vegetation. For more information on our riding mowers, make an enquiry on our website

Keep the Colour

Hanging baskets, as well as other tubs and pots can offer an extra element of colour to your garden. It is important to keep one eye on the weather when putting out hanging baskets, ensuring that they are covered if frost threatens.

Following these simple tips can ensure that your garden stays in great shape and will set you up perfectly for summer. At Balmers, we offer a range of garden machinery to ensure that you always have the right tools for any job in your garden this May.
