Balmers Advise on Your John Deere Lawn Mower Maintenance

Once spring rolls around we are regularly getting out in the garden with the lawn mower, making sure we have a lush and well maintained garden. However, we don’t always extend the same care to our mower. Keeping your John Deere lawn mower well maintained is the key to a healthy looking garden that we can sit back and relax in on sunny Sunday afternoons. If you are using a lawn mower which has fallen into poor condition, then this could affect the appearance of your garden. In this blog, we will look at some of the ways to keep your John Deere lawn mower in tip top shape.

Read your John Deere Manual

The first thing that you should do before attempting any maintenance on your lawn mower is to consult your manufacture’s manual. Ensure that any jobs you will be carrying out are recommended by the manual for your specific John Deere lawn tractor. Before you start working on the inside of your lawn mower, it is important that you remove the spark plugs, as this will prevent the lawn mower from starting accidently whilst you work.

Clean it out

You should first make sure that your lawn mower is clean and in good condition. Clean out any excess grass clippings around the mower deck and check the bagger attachment or discharge chute. You should ensure that your bagger attachment doesn’t have any holes or tears, as this may put your safety at risk. Using a damaged bagger could cause debris such as stone to fly out and hit the operator. If your lawn mower uses a discharge chute you should ensure that this doesn’t contain any blockages.

Change the Oil

Changing the oil of your mower every season will ensure that you avoid any debris from your garden getting caught in the oil and ruining your mower’s engine. The type of oil you will need and the amount required should be detailed in your user’s manual.

Sharpen the Blade

Keeping your blade sharp is essential to maintaining a healthy garden. A dull blade could actually shred the tips of your grass, causing your lawn to turn brown. A sharp blade will result in a swift cut and greener lawn. You can use either a metal file or a sharpening stone to sharpen a dull blade.

Inspect the Belt

The belts in the mower are needed to drive the transmission and control the torque. They can be checked by removing the belt guard and checking for wear and tear. If you do need to replace the belts of your John Deere lawn mower, then you should always make sure they are from the correct manufacturer to guarantee a proper fit.

Replace Spark Plugs

It is recommended that spark plugs are changed at the end of every season. This will increase the start-up speed of your mower and offer smoother running. Once again, you should make sure that you any parts replaced are from the manufacturer, as the wrong parts could cause damage to your lawn mowers engine.

Without regular checks of the parts of your lawn mower you could find that your machine isn’t performing to its expected standards. Including these lawn mower maintenance tips into your regular lawn care routine could save you money and prevent the need for extensive repairs to your John Deere lawn mower.
